crush

This body of work represents a significant shift for me, moving from abstract, non-representational imagery to a more emotionally-driven narrative. It blends my past experience with color, abstract painting, and welded steel sculpture, while exploring new techniques and concepts. The series began with photographs of abstract, everyday objects—most of them stripped of context, except for the rose. These images were printed on transparent film and mounted in fiberglass and resin boxes. My goal was to simplify them further and infuse them with emotional depth, pulling meaning from seemingly cold, detached objects. I selected a few of these studies and focused on specific details that conveyed particular emotions. The resulting pieces explore themes of emotional turmoil, and include works titled Crush, Lust, Ache, Crave, Languish, Discord, Estranged, and Release. Each piece is an archival pigment print on canvas, paper, or white aluminum, mounted on wood panel. The Crush Series was shown in a two-person exhibition at Toomey-Tourell Gallery in San Francisco in 2006.
