frames of reference
read artist statement
This body of work explores the relationship between my personal history and broader art history. I’ve been grappling with certain questions that I know will be answered not through analysis, but through visual expression. The project began by layering magazine pages and newspapers on bare wood panels, applying gesso over them. In many pieces, a word in Portuguese emerged as a focal point, becoming central to the painting. This process reflects how memory works—some elements fade into the background, while others remain vivid and prominent. Frames of Reference marks a deeper exploration of my creative practice, blending visual analysis with a personal connection to the work. It was shown as a solo exhibition at Butters Gallery in Portland, OR in November 2014.
