sirens, saints and sinners

During a ten-day silent meditation retreat in Spring 2022, I had visions of unfamiliar people and places, sparking curiosity and leading me to explore their origins. Inspired by Joseph Campbell’s Hero with a Thousand Faces, I was captivated by his discussion of archetypes and the collective unconscious—a shared “database” across times and cultures that allows us to access qualities we may not know we possess. Reflecting on moments when I rose to challenges I didn’t feel prepared for, I felt drawn to incorporate these ideas into my work. This led to SIRENS, SAINTS, AND SINNERS, a series blending various archetypes in faceless portraits that invite viewers to see reflections of themselves. These pieces, mostly acrylic and ink on wood with some newsprint collage, and one woven tapestry (Mother), were exhibited in a solo show at 555 California St. in San Francisco in Fall 2022.
